Digital Archaeology Project

This is a restored version of the original application, created as an exercise in digital archaeology and preservation. The restoration maintains the original navigation structure, content, and media assets while adapting obsolete technologies to modern web standards.

Key restoration principles:

  • Preserve the original visual design and user experience
  • Replace obsolete technologies (Flash, VRML) with modern equivalents
  • Maintain the original frameset-like navigation using HTML5 techniques
  • Keep original GIFs and other still-functional media intact
  • Add explanatory notes about the historical context
  • Convert auto-playing media to user-controlled playback

The project demonstrates how web development practices have evolved since 1997, while preserving this fascinating piece of web history.

Restoration completed in 2025.

Digital Archaeology Note: This is a modern restoration of a 1997 web application. The original used Flash animations, auto-playing WAV files, frames, and obsolete web technologies. These have been replaced with HTML5 equivalents while preserving the original look and navigation structure. Background images are now more visible, and redundant copyright footers have been removed.
